Carbon fiber fabrics can be classified in two ways. One method is based on weave density and type: there are classic woven fabrics (e.g., 1K, 3K, 12K) and unidirectional (UD) fabrics, which are not woven.
The other classification criterion is whether a carbon fiber fabric is high-modulus, high-strength, or designed for high impact resistance. The former are very rigid and lightweight, while the latter are extremely durable and more flexible. It is impossible to build a lightweight, rigid frame suitable for high-level racing without predominantly using the former type! Conversely, frame manufacturing could not exist without the latter.
